Purebred Breeding

Although mixed breeds make great pets for some people (and indeed my family and I adore our two "mutts"), the importance of purebred breeding should not be understated. Many people prefer to buy from breeders. Good breeders know the history, temperament, and unique qualities of their breed. They ensure that their puppies go to responsible families where the animals will be loved and nurtured. They will know what type of family or home situation is the best fit. By buying from a breeder, people have a good understanding of the type of companion they are getting and are aware of the history of health of the puppy and its parents.

Breeders are not only a good avenue through which to buy a pet, they are vital to the survival of breeds. Without breeders, there are no more breeds. Dog breeds are necessary because each breed has its own unique traits that make it a perfect fit for certain jobs. For example, Border Collies often make good sheep herding dogs and Golden Retrievers often excel as Seeing Eye dogs. The friendly and "eager to please" nature of Labrador Retrievers make them excellent choices for therapy dogs that work in hospitals and nursing homes.
